Harvard Summer Programme, June – July 2014

The Harvard University summer school is one of the international programmes hosted by the University of Ghana with the International Institute for Advanced Studies (IIAS) as the local coordinator. The programme is open to Harvard and non-Harvard students and includes a handful of students from the University of Ghana. The various students arrived on June 12 and 13, 2014. An orientation programme was organized by the International Progammes Office of the University of Ghana on June 16, 2014, to inform students about Ghanaian cultures and traditions, how to relate to people on and off campus, security measures, etc. Lectures began on Tuesday June 17, 2014, with two seasoned scholars, Professors Emmanuel Akyeampong (History) and Benjamin Kankpeyeng (Archaeology) from Harvard University and the University of Ghana respectively. The course offered was entitled; “Representing Ghana’s Past: Slave Trades, the African Diaspora and Slave Roots Tourism”. As part of their learning activities, the group embarked on a 12 day educational tour of Ghana with visits to Cape Coast/Elmina, Kumasi and Techiman. Historical and important places visited included sites such as Elmina Castle, the Kakum National Park, Ghana Museums and Monuments Board, the Manhyia Palace, the Tanoboase Sacred Grove, the Boabeng Fiema Monkey Sanctuary etc. The class was a part of an archaeological excavation at the monkey sanctuary.
